Pochettino Reflects on Balogun Decision Amidst World Cup Exit

USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino expresses regret over his lack of involvement in the Folarin Balogun red card situation during the World Cup, which he believes impacted the team's performance against Belgium.

Following the United States men’s national team’s (USMNT) disappointing exit from the World Cup after a 4-1 defeat to Belgium, head coach Mauricio Pochettino has shared his reflections on the controversial decision surrounding forward Folarin Balogun’s red card suspension.

Balogun received a red card during a match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, which typically results in a one-game suspension. However, after lobbying from the US Soccer Federation and former President Donald Trump, who reportedly contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino, the suspension was lifted for the crucial match against Belgium. Infantino later stated that the decision was made independently by FIFA’s disciplinary committee.

Pochettino admitted in a recent interview that he wished he had been more involved in the decision-making process regarding Balogun’s situation. He noted, “Maybe I regret not having been more involved,” acknowledging that the controversy surrounding the decision may have contributed to the team’s lacklustre performance against Belgium.

“As a football person, I understand everything,” he continued. “The energy changed the minute that happened. The match was played under different parameters, and that match was never a match where I believe the tactics, strategy, or selection of players would have changed the course of what happened.”

In the aftermath of the match, Pochettino suggested that the backlash from the Balogun incident created an uncomfortable atmosphere for the team, which may have affected their focus and performance on the pitch. He expressed a desire for a more streamlined decision-making process within US Soccer, stating that such matters should be managed by a smaller group of individuals to ensure clarity and focus on sporting decisions.

Looking ahead, Pochettino has voiced concerns over the USMNT’s packed schedule during the international window, which includes four matches in quick succession. He described this as a “big risk,” particularly given the physical demands on players who are either returning from pre-season or are in the midst of their club seasons.

“Plenty of other countries play only three this window,” he remarked. “I think it’s a big risk, lots of travel too. We weren’t involved in that planning. I’d have preferred to have much more space between games to help the guys grow in the way we want for the future.”
