Leclerc Leads Second Practice in Malaysia as Red Bull Show Strong Form

Charles Leclerc topped the second practice session for the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, with Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar close behind, indicating a competitive qualifying ahead.

Charles Leclerc emerged as the fastest driver in the second practice session for the Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit, clocking a time of 1:37.528. His performance put him just ahead of Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar, who finished 0.099 seconds slower. McLaren’s Lando Norris also showcased impressive speed, trailing Leclerc by a mere 0.137 seconds.

Despite not topping the session, Max Verstappen of Red Bull demonstrated significant potential, finishing fourth, just 0.257 seconds off the pace. Uncharacteristically, Verstappen opted not to conduct a qualifying simulation on soft tyres, focusing instead on long-run pace due to the high tyre degradation expected on the hot track.

Competitive Field Ahead of Qualifying

The results from Friday’s practice suggest a tightly contested qualifying session is on the horizon, with four teams appearing capable of challenging for pole position. Leclerc’s performance, combined with Red Bull’s strong race simulations, indicates that Verstappen could be a serious contender for both pole and a potential first win of the season.

Verstappen commented on the challenging conditions, stating, “The track is tricky, it’s really hot, a lot of degradation and so a lot of things to figure out. But it has been positive.” His experience at the Sepang circuit, where he last won in 2017, may play a crucial role in his performance this weekend.

Mercedes Faces Challenges

Lewis Hamilton, who finished fifth, was three tenths slower than his teammate and is currently under investigation for allegedly blocking Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto during the session. Mercedes, despite introducing significant upgrades to their car, struggled to find pace, with George Russell and Kimi Antonelli also failing to deliver standout performances.

Russell noted the difficulties faced by the team, stating, “We need to make some set-up adjustments. We’re a bit off the pace.” The upgrades, which include a new floor and rear suspension, were expected to enhance their competitiveness, but Red Bull’s performance suggests they remain the team to beat.

Upcoming Schedule

Fans can look forward to the final practice session on Saturday at 5:30 AM, followed by the qualifying session at 9:00 AM, both available live on Sky Sports F1 and Main Event. The Bahrain Grand Prix race will take place on Sunday, with build-up starting at 6:30 AM and the race commencing at 8:00 AM.
