Lando Norris Discusses Future with McLaren Ahead of Italian Grand Prix

In an exclusive interview, Lando Norris reveals his decision to extend his contract with McLaren until 2030, highlighting the importance of team dynamics and personal happiness over immediate success.

Lando Norris has confirmed his commitment to McLaren by signing a new contract that will keep him with the team until at least the end of 2030. In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports F1’s Martin Brundle, Norris discussed his decision and the various opportunities he considered before finalising his future with the Woking-based outfit.

The 26-year-old driver, who has recently enjoyed a successful run with back-to-back victories, described the contract signing as ‘probably the easiest contract I’ve had to sign’. However, he acknowledged that he had other options on the table, stating, ‘There was opportunity of course. But opportunity that is positive. There’s opportunities to gamble at times.’

Norris emphasised the significance of the team environment at McLaren, led by team bosses Zak Brown and Andrea Stella, as a key factor in his decision to stay. He remarked, ‘A good amount of it is also am I just happy? I was happy to be with McLaren even when we weren’t winning because I’m still in an amazing opportunity and I still get to do the job I love.’

As the Formula 1 season progresses, Norris finds himself in the title race, currently trailing championship leader Kimi Antonelli by 83 points. With Antonelli starting from the back of the grid due to engine penalties at the upcoming Italian Grand Prix, Norris sees a significant opportunity to close the gap.

Looking ahead to the race at Monza, Norris will face stiff competition from fellow drivers, including George Russell and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, both of whom have upgraded engines. The Italian Grand Prix is particularly special for Ferrari, as it is their home race, and they will be racing with a one-off livery paying tribute to Michael Schumacher.

In the interview, Norris was also asked about the possibility of joining Ferrari in the future. He stated, ‘That’s not something I want to think about for now. Since I was a kid, you always think of yourself in different positions. My dream was always to be with McLaren.’

As the Italian Grand Prix weekend approaches, fans can look forward to a packed schedule of events, including practice sessions and qualifying. The race itself is set to take place on Sunday, with live coverage available on Sky Sports F1.
