Guernsey’s T20 World Cup Aspirations Revived Following ICC Review
Guernsey Cricket's hopes of qualifying for the Men's T20 World Cup remain intact after a recent ICC review, allowing them to advance in the qualification process.
Guernsey Cricket’s ambitions to qualify for the Men’s T20 World Cup for the first time have received a significant boost following a review by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Initially, the islanders believed their campaign had concluded in disappointment after a loss to Jersey in the Europe Sub-Regional Qualifier A final held in Cyprus earlier this year. Despite winning all four of their group matches, Guernsey narrowly missed out on progression under the previous qualification rules.
However, the ICC’s reassessment of the qualification pathway has resulted in Guernsey being granted a place in the next phase of qualification for the 2028 T20 World Cup. This development has been described as “surreal” by Guernsey Cricket manager Rob Thomson, who expressed pride in his team’s performance during the qualifiers.
Manager’s Reflections on the Journey
Thomson shared his thoughts on the team’s journey, stating, “I’m still digesting the announcement. We went to Cyprus and did really well, but we missed out, and the group having one qualification spot is a brutal format.” He emphasised that Guernsey has demonstrated its quality and depth in cricket, particularly among non-traditional sides.
Looking Ahead to Future Challenges
Guernsey’s cricketing history includes reaching this stage of qualification only once before, in 2024, where they faced elimination by the Netherlands. They subsequently missed the opportunity to compete in the 2026 tournament hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Thomson noted, “It’s just the way it is with the numbers and depth of the European cricket at a sub-regional level. But I think we proved that there is depth and quality here.”
- Guernsey’s qualifying campaign will resume next year.
- The 2028 T20 World Cup will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
- Thomson believes Guernsey can compete effectively against teams like Denmark, Spain, and Portugal.
Thomson concluded with optimism, stating, “We romped through our sub-group, and I think we can certainly go there and target some wins. The cricket we’ve played over the last few years, and some of the performances that we’ve put in, give me confidence that we can give it a great shot.” The ICC has been contacted for further comments regarding this decision.
