Fitzroy River Approved as Olympic Rowing Venue Despite Crocodile Concerns

The Fitzroy River in Rockhampton, home to 500 saltwater crocodiles, has been approved to host rowing and canoeing events for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, following a technical assessment.

The Fitzroy River in Rockhampton, Queensland, has been officially selected to host the rowing and canoeing events for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games. This decision comes despite the river being home to approximately 500 saltwater crocodiles, raising questions about safety and competition integrity.

The independent technical assessment focused on the river’s performance under various conditions, including weather patterns, water levels, and flood risks, rather than the presence of crocodiles. The report was commissioned by the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA) and confirmed that the Fitzroy River Flatwater Facility is already a recognised venue for flatwater sports, having hosted numerous local and national events.

World Rowing and Paddle Worldwide have both endorsed the venue, with World Rowing President Jean-Christophe Rolland stating that the extensive analysis has assured them of fair competition conditions during the Games. Paddle Worldwide President Thomas Konietzko echoed this sentiment, expressing confidence in the venue’s ability to deliver a level playing field for athletes.

Brisbane 2032 President Andrew Liveris downplayed the crocodile issue, suggesting that concerns should not overshadow the potential of the venue. He emphasised a positive mindset towards the challenges posed by the natural environment, comparing it to the presence of sharks in the ocean.

However, some former athletes, like three-time Olympic gold medallist Drew Ginn, have voiced concerns regarding the potential for flooding and the overall experience for athletes and spectators. Ginn acknowledged that while he is not personally fearful of crocodiles, the idea of competing in a venue with such wildlife could impact the athletes’ performance and the fairness of the competition.

As preparations for the Games continue, the endorsement of the Fitzroy River as a competition venue provides clarity for future planning and operational work. The focus will now shift to ensuring that all aspects of the venue meet the necessary standards for a successful Olympic experience.
